Best Read, Summer 2019

What have you been reading this summer?

This book won’t be for everyone, but it is by far my favorite of the summer.
I found it strikingly beautiful…in its simple yet lovely prose, its sense of place and imagery, and its depth of emotion.

I can’t improve upon this review in The Guardian.

Tin Man

Tin Man’s epigraph:

I already feel that it has done me good to go South, the better to see the North.

I’ve read Tin Man too and enjoyed it. Having been brought up in Oxford it also brought back lots of memories.

I just revisited a favourite book by Margaret Laurence, a Canadian Author. This book, Stone Angel , resonates in a different way now that I am a senior. I read it in the 70’s after I discovered Laurence’s books. This book is often on high school curriculum . I wonder how high schoolers relate the the story of a 90 year old woman who simply runs away and reminisces about her tough and mostly unhappy life. The story reminds me of my mom who wanted to keep her independence while dementia was taking over. I’m sure she wanted to run away too. I still love this book as I did when I was just 28 years old!

It’s a gift when a book has the staying power to resonate differently at different stages of life. I’m always grateful for new recommendations and have put Stone Angel on my TBR list. Thanks Donna!
