Knowing that the arts are a strong part of its identity, I have wanted to go there for some time. I wasn&#8217;t disappointed in any way.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_678\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Biltmore-Grotesque.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-678\" class=\"wp-image-678 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Biltmore-Grotesque.jpg?resize=500%2C491\" alt=\"Biltmore Grotesque\" width=\"500\" height=\"491\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Biltmore-Grotesque.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Biltmore-Grotesque.jpg?resize=300%2C295&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-678\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Facade ornament, Biltmore Estate<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Although happy for the change of scene, I also found many comforting similarities to VT &#8212; from being surrounded by mountains and plenty of green space, to the excellent farm-to-table restaurants that value local food &amp; brew as much as we do here.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_679\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BiltmoreLoggiaView.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-679\" class=\"wp-image-679 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BiltmoreLoggiaView.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"BiltmoreLoggiaView\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BiltmoreLoggiaView.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BiltmoreLoggiaView.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-679\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from the loggia of the Biltmore mansion<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Asheville&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ashevillerad.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">River Arts District,<\/a> which\u00a0boasts more than 150 artists, sits beside the French Broad River, and is a vibrant area of artist-owned studio spaces spread out through renovated mills &amp; warehouses.\u00a0Among others, I was able to visit the studio of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bzdesign.biz\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BZ Designs<\/a> and speak briefly with Barbara Zaretsky, who uses natural dyes and clamped resist in her lovely work.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BZ-Designs.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-680 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BZ-Designs.jpg?resize=250%2C263&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"BZ Designs\" width=\"250\" height=\"263\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There are also numerous galleries in the center of town. My favorite was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluespiral1.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blue Spiral 1<\/a> with its current exhibition entitled &#8220;<strong>Structure<\/strong>\u201d, a group show of five artists who all have a connection to the <a href=\"http:\/\/penland.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penland School of Crafts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BlueSpiral1Show.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-681\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BlueSpiral1Show.jpg?resize=500%2C216\" alt=\"BlueSpiral1Show\" width=\"500\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BlueSpiral1Show.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/BlueSpiral1Show.jpg?resize=300%2C130&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I was immediately taken by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluespiral1.com\/Artist-Detail.cfm?ArtistsID=760\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rob Pulleyn&#8217;s<\/a> ceramic vessels. They are substantial and sturdy, yet any first impression of \u201cchunkiness&#8221; is belied upon closer inspection. Each piece possesses a matte surface that is marked with delicacy and intricacy, paired with earthy colors that, while adding to the sense of solidity, also provide a suitable ground for the beauty of these richly detailed exteriors.\u00a0 Pulleyn&#8217;s skill orchestrates a finely-tuned balancing act between structure and surface. I wasn\u2019t the only one impressed, as indicated by the numerous little red dots on the accompanying ID tags.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_682\" style=\"width: 481px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mime.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-682\" class=\"wp-image-682 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mime.jpg?resize=471%2C550\" alt=\"Mime\" width=\"471\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mime.jpg?w=471&amp;ssl=1 471w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Mime.jpg?resize=257%2C300&amp;ssl=1 257w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-682\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rob Pulleyn \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>Mime&#8221;<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Terra sigillata, stains, oxides 9 x 11 x 5 inches<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I knew his name sounded vaguely familiar, but it wasn\u2019t until I looked him up afterward that I had one of those slap-your-forehead moments, realizing Pulleyn had founded <strong>Fiberarts Magazine<\/strong> and later <strong>Lark Books<\/strong>, both based in Asheville.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pulleyn writes that he had concentrated on the materials and techniques of textiles for more than thirty years, but when he began to explore clay in the 1990&#8217;s he found an immediate affinity. His <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pottersofmadisoncounty.com\/rob-pulleyn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">artist statement<\/a> is enlightening; he doesn&#8217;t take himself too seriously and his thoughts regarding self-imposed restrictions are key. There is much to be learned from the following:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px; text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8220;With each piece, I force myself to do something I\u2019ve never done before:\u00a0 a form, a texture, or a color, for instance. This means each piece is an experiment of sorts. It also means I destroy a lot of evidence, but it keeps the anxiety level sufficiently high and the joy of success addictively sweet.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_683\" style=\"width: 445px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01100.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-683\" class=\"wp-image-683 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01100.jpg?resize=435%2C550\" alt=\"01100\" width=\"435\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01100.jpg?w=435&amp;ssl=1 435w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/01100.jpg?resize=237%2C300&amp;ssl=1 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 435px) 100vw, 435px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-683\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rob Pulleyn\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 &#8220;<strong>01100&#8243; \u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/strong> \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Terra sigillata, stains, oxides 11 x 15 x 6 in<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The most salient point for me, however, is that his decades of experience with fiber have not only informed the beauty and complexity of his vessels&#8217; surfaces, but is still given voice through the language of clay.
