{"id":5413,"date":"2019-04-11T18:41:22","date_gmt":"2019-04-11T18:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/?p=5413"},"modified":"2019-04-11T18:41:22","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T18:41:22","slug":"look-to-arts-formalities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.elizabethfram.com\/Blog\/look-to-arts-formalities\/","title":{"rendered":"Look to Art&#8217;s Formalities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tuesday I loaded 25 pieces into a van and sent them on their way &#8212; all carefully wrapped, labeled, and ready to hang in the upcoming exhibit <strong><em>The Dialects of Line, Color, and Texture <\/em><\/strong>at the <a href=\"http:\/\/highlandartsvt.org\/the-dialects-of-line-color-and-texture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Highland Center for the Arts<\/a> in Greensboro.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I am honored to have my work in company with pieces by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.frankwoodsartist.com\/abstract7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank Woods<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creativeground.org\/profile\/elizabeth-billings-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elizabeth Billings<\/a>, and I am very gratified to be part of a show that reaches beyond a specific medium or subject matter, instead highlighting how, despite the obvious contrasts, we all three gravitate to similar underlying formal structures to express our ideas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I find this particularly pleasing since the formality of line, color, texture, shape, and composition is a major driving force behind both my drawings and my textile pieces. Perhaps, subconsciously, this explains why I was immediately attracted to both Frank&#8217;s and Elizabeth&#8217;s art when we moved to Vermont almost ten years ago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I hope you&#8217;ll be able to join us for the opening on Saturday, or will be able to get up to Greensboro at some point during the show&#8217;s run (through May 26th). Attracted to her consideration of edges and the way she divides space, (again the formalities of art holding strong sway), I purchased two of Bolton&#8217;s books in the mid-90s: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Patchwork-Folk-Art-Appliqu%C3%A9-Techniques\/dp\/1846013224\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patchwork Folk Art<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Patchwork-Garden-Design-Applique\/dp\/B003PNYE3S\/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=in+a+patchwork+garden&amp;qid=1554924218&amp;s=books&amp;sr=1-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">In a Patchwork Garden<\/a>. Hindsight reveals a predictable pattern of preference for these qualities, which resurfaced in my later inclination toward the work of <a href=\"http:\/\/dorothycaldwell.com\/home.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dorothy Caldwell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artic.edu\/artworks\/16146\/equestrienne-at-the-cirque-fernando\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Toulouse-Lautrec<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.getty.edu\/pacificstandardtime\/explore-the-era\/worksofart\/ocean-park-no-67\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Richard Diebenkorn<\/a>, among others, and continues to attract me to artists today.<br \/>\nThe dye, as they say, was cast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tuesday I loaded 25 pieces into a van and sent them on their way &#8212; all carefully wrapped, labeled, and ready to hang in the upcoming exhibit The Dialects of Line, Color, and Texture at the Highland Center for the Arts in Greensboro.
